Terms of Service
Last updated: June 22, 2026
These terms govern your use of BackyardCheck. In short: the Service gives you informational ADU feasibility estimates for the City of Los Angeles. It is not legal advice and not an official determination, so always verify a result with the City before you rely on it.
1. Acceptance of these terms
By accessing or using BackyardCheck (the “Service”), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service. We may update these terms from time to time; continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
2. What the Service does
BackyardCheck helps homeowners check whether they may be able to build an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on a property in the City of Los Angeles. You enter an address and receive an estimated feasibility verdict, by-right size, height, and setback figures with code citations, and optionally a paid report with cost and rent estimates. All output is informational and based on automated analysis of public data.
3. Not legal advice or an official determination
BackyardCheck is not a law firm, architect, engineer, or government agency, and using the Service does not create any professional or advisory relationship. Verdicts and estimates are not legal advice, not a permit, and not an official zoning or planning determination. Zoning rules, overlays, and parcel data change and can be ambiguous. Before you make decisions, spend money, or rely on any result, verify it with the City of Los Angeles (City Planning and LADBS) and your own qualified professionals.
4. No warranty
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose. We work to be accurate and flag ambiguous parcels for review rather than guessing, but we do not warrant that any verdict, estimate, citation, or cost or rent figure is correct, current, or applicable to your specific situation.
5. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, BackyardCheck and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or special damages, or for any decision you make or money you spend based on the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us, if any, in the twelve months before the claim.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to misuse the Service: no scraping or bulk extraction of data, no attempts to disrupt or reverse-engineer the Service, no use that violates applicable law, and no reselling or redistributing output as if it were an official determination. We may suspend access that we reasonably believe is abusive.
7. Paid reports
A detailed report is available as a one-time purchase. It includes cost and rent estimates for a single property and, like the free check, is informational only. Estimates rely on assumptions that are labeled in the report; they are not quotes, appraisals, or guarantees of any cost, rent, return, or approval.
8. Intellectual property
BackyardCheck, its software, design, and original content are owned by us and protected by applicable law. Underlying zoning and parcel data come from public sources, including the City of Los Angeles GeoHub, and remain subject to their own terms. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service for your own property research.
9. Third-party data
The Service relies on public and third-party data and services. We do not control that data and are not responsible for its accuracy or availability. Citations point to primary sources so you can verify them directly.
10. Changes to the Service and terms
We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We may revise these terms; when we do, we will update the date above. Material changes take effect when posted.
11. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Los Angeles County, California.
